Westwood, MA --- WPI freshman Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) has been named as the NEWMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA), junior Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) and junior Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) were lauded as the NEWMAC Women's Relay of the Week.
Sykes posted the quickest times in a pair of events to help WPI collect wins over Simmons (165-135), Brandeis (197-96), Smith (241-59) and Babson (241-48) in the first dual meets of the season Friday night. The rookie was the first of three Engineers to touch the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:09.72 and later had the fastest 400-yard IM performance with a 4:42.14, which is the top NEWMAC time of the young season. She was also the second leg of the victorious 200-yard medley relay.
The 200-yard freestyle relay foursome completed the sweep with a 1:42.42. Berner was second in the 100-yard freestyle (56.24) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.66) while Pawlak won the 50-yard freestyle (24.93) and placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.64). de Oliveira was third in the 50 free (26.44) and Morgan was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke.
Women's Swimming & Diving entertains Coast Guard and Southern Connecticut at noon on Saturday.
