WORCESTER – Freshman Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) won three events to lead the WPI women's swimming & diving to a split decision with Southern Connecticut State University and Coast Guard Saturday in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers bested the Owls 215-85 and were upended 161-139 by the Bears. Coast Guard also defeated SCSU by a count of 186-114.
Sykes captured the 200-yard IM (2:14.31) after leading the Crimson and Gray to 1-2-3 finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes. In the shorter race, Sykes posted a 1:09.45 to finish ahead of sophomore Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) and junior Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) who handed in times of 1:10.67 and 1:11.25, respectively. The 200 saw Sykes hand in a 2:33.58 while Edwardson was second (2:34.26) and Silsby was third (2:34.75).
The quartet of junior Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), Sykes, freshman Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) and freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) began the meet with a second-place 4:08.33 in the 400-yard medley relay. Seo touched the wall second in the 100-yard (1:03.23) and 200-yard (2:15.43) backstrokes as did Pawlak in the 50-yard (25.12) and 100-yard (56.52) freestyle. Harter was third in the 100-yard (1:01.58) and 200-yard (2:14.97) butterfly.
Freshman Monika Nowak (Longmeadow, MA), junior Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY), junior Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) and Pawlak closed out the meet with a runner up 1:41.98 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Julia Noël (Beverly, MA) added second-place performances in the diving events and was .4 points behind the 1-meter winner from Southern Connecticut.
In the distance events, junior Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:59.90) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.74). Sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) led the team in the 200-yard freestyle with a third-place 2:02.57.
The Engineers travel to Bowdoin to take on the preseason No. 19 Polar Bears and preseason No. 6 MIT Saturday.
