WORCESTER – Senior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI), junior Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) and freshman Sid Williams (Irvine, CA) all earned individual victories as WPI defeated Division II Southern Connecticut State University, 206-88, and fell to preseason No. 22 Coast Guard, 186-114, Saturday in men's swimming & diving action Saturday in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Bears bested the Owls, 220-78, in the matchup between the visiting teams.
Perry secured the 100-yard butterfly (52.31) while Chen won the 100-yard breaststroke (57.76) and Williams claimed the 100-yard backstroke (52.55). Both Perry and Chen were also on the winning 400-yard medley relay along with senior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) and graduate student Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) with a time of 3:26.32. Chen was also the runner up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.59), as was Bauer in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.84) and Barrett in the 100-yard freestyle (47.74). Bauer took fifth in the 200-yard butterfly as well (1:59.89).
Senior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was the opening leg of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay that also featured Perry, Bauer and Barrett. Miralda added a second-place 21.85 in the 50-yard freestyle while senior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) was the runner up in the 200-yard IM (2:00.87).
In the diving events, junior Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) was third at both heights and amassed 207.90 points in the 1-meter.
Sophomore Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.26) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.45). Junior Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) touched the wall sixth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.26).
WPI heads to Bowdoin Saturday for a tough test that includes preseason No. 4 MIT.
