Brunswick, ME --- Senior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) was the lone WPI winner as the men's swimming & diving team topped host No. 25 Bowdoin, 154-144, and fell to No. 6 MIT, 233-67, Saturday afternoon. Cambridge's Engineers (3-1) also defeated the Polar Bears (0-2) 232-66.
Bauer guided the ninth-ranked team in the latest CSCAA regional coaches' poll with a 1:55.06 in the 200-yard backstroke. He was also fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.19), as well as, a member of the second-place 200-yard medley relay (1:34.42) and third-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.56). The 200 medley relay, which was .68 off the winning pace, featured junior Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), senior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and graduate student Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) while the 400 free relay also included freshman Sid Williams (Irvine, CA), Perry and Barrett. Chen and Williams were third in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.33) and 100-yard backstroke (52.84), respectively, as Barrett was sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (48.64).
Freshman Donald Buglino (Titusville, NJ) took third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.52) and sophomore Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (51.89). Senior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) claimed a pair of fourth-place finishes with a 2:15.27 in the 200-yard breaststroke and a 1:59.27 in the 200-yard IM. Sophomore Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) touched the wall fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:20.96) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.47) for the Engineers.
The 200-yard freestyle saw junior Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) secure sixth in a time of 1:49.22. Junior Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) was the top scorer in the dives with an eight-place showing on the 3-meter and a ninth-place day on the 1-meter.
WPI, who is also receiving votes in the CSCAA national poll, resumes action with the three-day Gompei Invitational beginning on Friday, November 30 at 9:30am.
