Brunswick, ME --- Freshman Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) finished second in a pair of events as the WPI women's swimming & diving team was upended by No. 8 MIT and host No. 21 Bowdoin Saturday afternoon. Cambridge's Engineers (3-1) won 222-78 and the Polar Bears (1-1) began the season with a 199-100 victory. MIT defeated Bowdoin in their dual 181-118.
Sykes led the Engineers (5-3) with a runner up time in the 200-yard IM (2:12.88) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.72), and was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.79). The newcomer also teamed with junior Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), junior Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) in the fourth-place 200-yard medley relay (1:54.35). Seo came home fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.31) and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.88) while Pawlak was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.57) and 50-yard freestyle (25.06).
Junior Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) claimed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:59.44) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.00). Also placing fourth was the quartet of sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), junior Carol Wang (Framingham, MA), freshman Kimmy Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) and Pawlak in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:47.73). Berner added a seventh-place time of 56.60 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Freshman Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) chipped in with a 2:16.24, which was good for sixth, in the 200-yard butterfly. Junior Leigh Whitehorn (Madison, NJ) and sophomore Julia Noël (Beverly, MA) led the WPI divers with seventh-place scores on the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively. Freshman Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY) finished 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.99).
WPI is back in action when it hosts the three-day Gompei Invitational beginning on Friday, November 30 at 9:30am.
