Bennett Surpasses Griffith as Men’s Swimming Sweeps Franklin & Marshall and Susquehanna

Lancaster, PA --- Senior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) won a pair of events as nationally-ranked WPI defeated host Franklin & Marshall, 143-118, and Susquhanna, 177-84, in a double dual Sunday at the Kunkel Aquatics Center McGinness Pool. Franklin & Marshall won the dual with Susquehanna 160-101. The sweep saw head coach Paul Bennett collect his 112th and 113th win to pass Whit Griffith as the all-time leader in men's swimming & diving victories. 

The Engineers, who are currently No. 18 in the CSCAA national poll, improve to 10-2 on the year. The Diplomats, the eight-ranked team in the Northeast South region, moves to 5-3 and the River Hawks end the weekend at 2-5. 

Bauer swept the butterfly events with a 51.39 in the 100 and a 1:57.96 in the 200. He also collaborated with junior Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), senior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and senior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) to take the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:34.35, an improvement of nearly a second from their winning-time 24 hours earlier. Chen collected the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.74) and secured fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.31) as Miralda was second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.24) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.73). Bauer, juniors Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) and Matthew Scherrer (Wellesley, MA), and Miralda closed out the scoring portion of the meet with a runner up time of 3:18.84 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Zimmermann touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.64) as sophomore Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) paced the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:06.92) and freshman Sid Williams (Irvine, CA) came home first in the 100-yard backstroke (52.51). Williams was also third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.05).

Senior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA), sophomore Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) and junior Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) all earned silver in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.12), 200-yard IM (2:02.12) and the non-scoring 400-yard IM (4:34.95), respectively.

The Engineers travel to UMass Dartmouth Wednesday for a 6:30pm meet that also includes Wheaton. Franklin & Marshall entertains McDaniel Friday, Jan. 25 at 6pm and Susquehanna heads to Ursinus Friday for a 5pm start.
