Harter and Sykes Lead Women’s Swimming to Split with Susquehanna and Franklin & Marshall

Lancaster, PA --- Freshmen Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) and Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) each collected an individual victory as the WPI women's swimming team split with Susquehanna and host Franklin & Marshall Sunday at the Kunkel Aquatics Center McGinness Pool. The Engineers (8-6), who entered 2019 as the ninth ranked team in the region and earned a vote in the CSCAA national coaches poll, defeated the River Hawks 138-123 and were upended 142-119 by the host Diplomats. Franklin & Marshall (6-3) completed the sweep with a 131-130 decision over Susquehanna (2-5).

Harter won the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.96) and was second in the 100-yard version of the event (1:01.35). Sykes took the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.79) to go with runner up finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.92) and 200-yard IM (2:15.25). The duo was joined in the second-place 200-yard medley relay (1:54.84) by junior Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) and freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA).

Seo also turned in a pair of third place times of 1:02.32 and 2:16.03 in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes while Pawlak was second in the 50-yard freetyle (25.18) and anchored the second place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:46.02). The final scored event of the day also featured junior Carol Wang (Framingham, MA), junior Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and freshman Kimmy Hazeltine (Stratham, NH). While an exhibition, senior Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA) capped off the day with the only sub-five minute 400-yard IM (4:59.81).

Freshman Sarah DeMaio (Millersville, MD) handed in a third-place 11:19.67 in the 1,000-yard freestyle while sophomore Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) also earned bronze with a 1:12.90 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Junior Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) added a fourth-place 5:24.50 in the 500-yard freestyle and sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) chipped in with a fifth-place 57.17 in the 100-yard freestyle.

WPI is at UMass Dartmouth Wednesday for a 6:30pm double dual with Wheaton. Franklin & Marshall hosts McDaniel on Friday, Jan. 25 at 6pm and Susquehanna is at Ursinus Friday at 5pm.
