WORCESTER – The WPI women's swimming & diving team is tied for fifth and the men's team is sixth after the first night of the 2018 NEWMAC Championships being hosted at the Sports & Recreation Center.
Coast Guard (66) paces the women and MIT (131) leads the men. The Crimson and Gray women totaled 46 points and the men collected 53.
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay lineup featuring freshman Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA), sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), junior Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and junior Jillian Clemente (Killingwoth, CT) finished sixth in a time of 7:50.18 while junior Anna Matsco (Windham, NH), freshman Monika Nowak (Longmeadow, MA), Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) and senior Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) claimed fifth in the B final with an 8:00.93.
Senior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), sophomore Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA), senior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) got off to a very fast start in their 800 free relay but ended up taking third in a time of 6:47.78. Junior Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) later earned valuable points with a 10th-place score of 311.00 in the 3-meter dive. He made the final with a 287.25 in the prelims.
Friday will feature the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay trials at 10am, and the women's 1-meter dive prelims are scheduled for 2:45pm. Finals are set to begin at 6pm.
