WORCESTER – An individual and a relay placed fifth for the WPI women's swimming & diving team on the third day of the 2019 NEWMAC Championships being held in the Sports & Recreation Center. The host Engineers remain sixth with 375 points. MIT leads with 851, followed by Wheaton (627), Coast Guard (486), Wellesley (451) and Springfield (402).
Junior Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), freshman Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA), freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) and sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) closed out the day with a 1:49.76 in the 200-yard medley relay while Pawlak handed in a 1:07.33 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sykes was also eighth in the 400-yard IM (4:39.58).
The quartet of freshman Kimmy Hazeltine (Stratham, NH), sophomore Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME), freshman Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) and junior Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) finished third in the 200 medley relay consolation final with a 1:51.84. Silsby was also seventh in the 100 breast (1:08.13). Junior Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) and sophomore Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA), meanwhile, secured points in the 100 breast B final, as did Edwardson, senior Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY), freshman Sarah DeMaio (Millersville, MD), senior Kelly Martin (Penfield, NY) and junior Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) in the 400 IM.
Junior Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) led the way in the 100-yard butterfly with an eighth-place 58.98. Harter, junior Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT), freshman Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY) and junior Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) represented the Crimson and Gray in the B final.
The 100-yard backstroke saw freshman Jenn Brownell (Spring, TX) place 12th (1:00.51) and Seo also race in the consolation heat. Berner chipped in with a 14th-place 1:58.00 in the 200-yard freestyle.
The final day begins with the prelims on Sunday at 10am, followed by the finals session at 6pm. The events include the 1650 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, the 200 fly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay.
