Greensboro, NC --- The WPI men's 400-yard medley relay team secured All-America honorable mention accolades on the second day of the 2019 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by the ODAC and Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Engineers enter the third day with 16 points, which is tied with Albion for 20th place out of 36 scoring teams.
Senior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), junior Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), sophomore Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) and graduate student Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) finished seventh in the consolation final to place 15th overall with a 3:19.39. The configuration of Bauer, Chen, senior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Barrett collaborated for a 16th-place 3:20.95 to secure a spot for WPI in the evening session by .20 seconds over a team from Swarthmore.
Besch, Barrett, senior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Bauer began the day with a 19th-place 1:23.61 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, an improvement of .66 on the time clocked by Barrett, Perry, Chen and Miralda at the NEWMAC Championships (1:24.27). Besch then paced a trio of Engineers in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.61. Bauer followed with a 49.66 and Perry posted a 50.11.
Bauer takes center stage in the 100-yard backstroke while the 800-yard freestyle relay will compete in a timed final on Friday.
