Pawlak and Wang Excel for Women's Swimming and Diving at Worcester City Championships

WORCESTER -- Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) and Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) collected third-place finishes as the WPI Women's Swimming and Diving team placed third at the two-day Worcester City Championship hosted by Holy Cross.  

The Engineers collected 775 points, finishing closely behind second-place Division II Assumption (894).  Division I Holy Cross won the title with 1,152 points and Clark (273) finished fourth.  

Pawlak had a busy day on Saturday, including claiming third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.64). She was WPI's top finisher in 100-yard freestyle (8th, 56.52) and also took part in all four relays, finishing fourth in all of them. 

Wang took third place in 100-yard butterfly (1:00.94) and also led the Engineers in the 100-yard backstroke (8th, 1:04.41). 

Julia Noel (Beverly, MA) finished a close runner-up in the 3-meter dive with a score of 223.04, less than 7 points behind winner Abbey Bryant of Holy Cross. 

In the relays, the same foursome of Pawlak, Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT), Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) and Lexi Clark (Easton, MD) finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.56) and the 400 free relay (3:48.81). 

Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA), Pawlak and Clark swam the 200-yard medley relay (4th, 1:56.08), while Seo, Sykes, Cameron Cronin (Cumberland, RI) and Pawlak teamed up for the 400-yard medley relay (4:15.80). 

Clemente came in a few spots behind Wang in the 100-yard butterfly (5th, 1:02.01), and was the Engineers' top finisher in the 500-yard freestyle (6th, 5:31.43) and the 200-yard butterfly (7th, 2:10.89). 

Sykes also had three top 10 finishes, as she was WPI's top swimmer in the 400-yard individual medley (5th, 4:55.35), the 200-yard IM (6th, 2:16.13) and the 200-yard breaststroke (8th, 2:37.90). 

Molly Silsby (Augusta, MA) took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.90), followed by Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) in sixth place (1:14.10). 

Erica Houghton (Berkley, MA) was the seventh-place finisher in the 1,000 free (11:34.41), followed by Sarah DeMaio (Millersville, MD) in seventh (11:42.34) 

WPI opens its home campaign Friday, entertaining Babson, Brandeis, Smith and Simmons at 6:30pm.
