Westwood, MA --- WPI senior diver Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) and the Engineers 400 yard freestyle relay were honored as the NEWMAC revealed its first weekly awards of the season on Monday.
Nelson picked up the NEWMAC Diver of the Week award after he earned the Whit Griffith (WPI Coach '82-'02) Diver of the Meet award as the Engineers captured their eighth straight Worcester City Meet title. The senior took first in the 1-meter dive (214.65) and 3-meter dive (200.40).
The quartet of Matthew Shriner (Arlington, MA), John Puksta (Nashua, NH), Peter Fagerholm (Newtown, CT), and Sid Williams (Fairfax, VA) claimed victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:17.49 at the 19th annual Worcester City Championships this past weekend.
As a team, the Engineers amassed 1,134 points to capture the Paul Parenteau trophy for the 14th time in 19 years at the event that includes Division I Holy Cross. For his efforts, Williams was named the Justin Ferris (WPI) Swimmer of the Meet.
Coast Guard's Joseph Rodriguez was tabbed the conference's swimmer of the week.
WPI opens its home campaign on Friday, taking on Babson and Brandeis at 6:30pm.
