WORCESTER --- Junior Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) pocketed her first two victories of the season in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke to account for two of the Women's Swimming & Diving team's five wins in a split result three-way meet against Coast Guard and Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.
The Engineers (5-1) notched a commanding win over Southern Connecticut, 187-109, but were pipped by the Bears, 163-137, for their first meet loss of the season. Coast Guard topped the Owls by a score of 197-99.
Swett edged Olivia Petropulos (Hollis, NH) and Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:11.21, just ahead of Petropulos (2nd, 1:11.33) and Edwardson (3rd, 1:11:39) as WPI dominated the top 10.
In the 200 breaststroke, Swett (2:33.77) beat out second-place Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) with a time of 2:34.80, while Petropulos came in third (2:36.96).
Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) had a strong showing in the freestyle sprints, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 25.02 seconds and took third in the 100 free (56.28). Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) finished in fifth place in both events, registering times of 26.28 seconds and 56.88 seconds.
Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) led a contingent of Engineers in the 100-yard butterfly, winning in 1:00.77. Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Sophie Chase (South Portland, ME) came in third (1:02.88) and fourth (1:02.91).
WPI's final event victory came in the 200-yard medley relay, as Jenn Brownell (Spring, TX), Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME), Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) and Pawlak beat the field with a time of 1:53.74.
Meanwhile, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Clemente, Pawlak, Lexi Clark (Easton, MD) and Hazeltine finished runner-up, clocking in at 1:43.36).
In addition to her 200 breaststroke result, Sykes had another second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.88), while Wang rounded out the top five (5th, 2:21.13). Sykes was then WPI's top swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle in fifth place (2:00.84), finishing just ahead of Clemente in sixth (2:01.43).
Clemente also had a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.64). Anne Hughes (Woodbury, NY) (4th, 2:18.27) and Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) (5th, 2:21.49) both finished in the top five for the Engineers.
Brownell (2nd, 1:02.62) came in ahead of Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) (4th, 1:03.90) in the 100-yard backstroke, but the reversed order in the 200-yard backstroke as Seo finished sixth (2:18.39) and Brownell seventh (2:18.67).
Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) and Sarah DeMaio (Millersville, MD) finished back-to-back in both distance events. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Gonyea took fifth place (11:21.37), followed by DeMaio (6th, 11:31.33). Gonyea finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.73) and DeMaio eighth (5:37.34).
The Engineers will be back in the pool next Saturday, Nov. 16 in a four-way meet at Williams College. WPI will also compete against Tufts and Wesleyan.
