Olson Bags Top 3 Finish in Men’s Swimming and Diving Split Versus MIT and Bowdoin

WORCESTER --- Sophomore Matthew Olson (Honolulu, HI) secured his first top 3 finish of the season and WPI Men's Swimming & Diving's only of the swimming events in a split result meet against MIT and Bowdoin on Saturday in Worcester. 

Olson came in third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:14.02, while Peter Fagerholm (Newtown, CT) and Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) each had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the backstroke and breaststroke events. 

The Cambridge Engineers swept the meet, dominating their Worcester rivals, 238-60 and Bowdoin, 231-62. Meanwhile, WPI edged the Polar Bears, 150-144. 

Fagerholm secured fourth position in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.79 seconds, edging teammate Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) by 0.21 seconds (5th, 54.00). Fagerholm finished in the same spot in the 200 backstroke (4th, 1:58.31), this time besting Aaron McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI) in sixth place (2:01.70).  

WPI was competitive in the breaststroke, as Denbow claimed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.64. Shortly behind him were Ashton Lyon (Loveland, CO) in sixth (1:04.89) and Harry Saperstein (Simsbury, CT) in seventh (1:05.50). In the 200 breaststroke, Denbow (4th, 2:18.22) led four straight Engineers swimmers. Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA) followed in fifth (2:21.54), BK Jeong (Marshfield, MA) in sixth (2:23.53) and then Lyon in seventh (2:23.64). 

Denbow was part of another fourth-place finisher, WPI's 200-yard medley relay squad, which also featured Staubi, Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) and John Puksta (Nashua, NH), clocking in at 1:37.78. 

Puksta paced the hosts in the 100-yard freestyle, coming in fourth (49.50), just ahead of Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD) in sixth (49.93). The freshman then grabbed sixth place in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.29, which was one spot ahead of Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) in seventh (1:48.69). 

Zimmerman broke five minutes in the 500-yard freestyle, taking sixth place with a time of 4:59.21, just ahead of Henry Buda (Laurel, MD) in seventh (5:00.70). 

Buda also factored into the 1,000 freestyle, as Matthew Shriner (Arlington, MA) and Buda followed Olson in fifth (10:18.35) and sixth place (10:26.25). Shriner had an additional sixth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.98). 

Staubi and Besch finished back-to-back in the 100-yard butterfly, taking the fifth (53.09) and sixth (53.37) spots, while Scholz and Besch did the same in the 50-yard freestyle as the former finished seventh (22.70) and the latter eighth (22.75). 

Puksta, Scholz, Shriner and Fagerholm joined up to take sixth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while Peter Guertin (Sutton, MA) was the Engineers' leader in the 200-yard butterfly, coming in seventh in 2:05.65. 

In the diving events, Christopher Nelson (Millbury, MA) took third place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 179.55 and fourth in the 1-meter dive (185.80). 

Next up, WPI will host the Gompei Invitational on December 6-8.
