WORCESTER – Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) and Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) each had top 10 finishes and were also a part of WPI Women's Swimming & Diving's sixth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay as the host Engineers finished Day 1 of the Gompei Invitational in fourth place out of 12 teams.
The sophomore Sykes took eighth position in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.22, while Gonyea claimed ninth in the 1,650 freestyle (18:16.14). They also joined forces with Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) and Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) to break eight minutes in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:59.06).
Bryant (1,190 points) and Rowan (833) pulled away from the field on the first day of the three-day meet, with Bentley following in third place (613), and WPI (555.5) and Hamilton (526) rounding out the top five.
The Engineers also picked up points in the mixed 200-yard medley, as Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) and Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) joined with Sid Williams (Fairfax, VA), Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) to finish in sixth place with a time of 1:41.98.
Julia Noël (Beverly, MA) had WPI's highest individual finish, snagging seventh place in the 3-meter dive (341.55), while, Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) came in eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.17) and Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) took ninth in the 100 butterfly (59.54) to round out the hosts' top 10 results.
Pawlak was the Engineers' top swimmer in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 24.56 to finish third in the B final. She also teamed with Jenn Brownell (Spring, TX), Swett and Wang for 12th place in the 200 medley relay (1:50.73).
The morning prelims for Day 2 of the Gompei Invitational begin at 9am on Saturday, while the finals will follow afterward starting at 5:30pm.
