WORCESTER -- Junior Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) secured WPI Men's Swimming & Diving's first win of the Gompei Invitational on Saturday in Day 2 of the meet, triumphing in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 22.81 seconds.
Besch also helped the Engineers pick up points in the days relay events, while Matthew Shriner (Arlington, MA) and Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) both had top five finishes to send WPI into fifth place (1,117 points) out of 12 teams.
WPI has now racked up a combined 2,698 men's and women's points after two days in the pool. First-place Division I Bryant has a comfortable lead with 4,173 points, followed by Rowan in second with 3,093 points. Division II Bentley sits just behind the Engineers in fourth place with 2,623 points Roger Williams is fifth with 2,076.50 points.
Shriner snagged runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:08.48, while Staubi claimed third place in the 50-yard backstroke (24.43) and sixth place in the 100 backstroke (51.82). Ryan Martinage (Bethesda, MD) also made the A final in the 50 backstroke, coming in ninth with a time of 25.21 seconds.
Besch and Staubi joined withZach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) and John Puksta (Nashua, NH) to finish sixth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:28.43), while Besch, Puksta, Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) and Peter Fagerholm (Newtown, CT) pocketed seventh in the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.55).
Puksta also secured a 10th-place result in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.85), and Denbow was WPI's top swimmer in the 100 breaststroke (15th, 59.67).
The hosts had two top 10 squads in the mixed 400-yard medley relay, as Denbow, Puksta, Jenn Brownell (Spring, TX) and Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) came in ninth (3:48.08), followed by the team of Staubi, Besch, Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) and Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) (10th, 3:49.42).
The grouping of Staubi, Puksta, Pawlak and Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) claimed 10th place in the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:33.60.
The final day of the Gompei Invitational will begin with the preliminaries races Sunday morning at 9am. followed by the finals starting at 5pm.
