Pawlak, Sykes Power Women’s Swimming and Diving on Day 2 of Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER --- Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) and Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) each had top five finishes to lead the way for WPI Women's Swimming & Diving on Day 2 of the Gompei Invitational, helping deliver the hosts into fifth place out of the 12 teams competing in the three-day meet. 

WPI has now racked up a combined 2,698 men's and women's points after two days in the pool. First-place Division I Bryant has a comfortable lead with 4,173 points, followed by Rowan in second with 3,093 points. Division II Bentley sits just behind the Engineers in fourth place with 2,623 points Roger Williams is fifth with 2,076.50 points.  

Pawlak had WPI's top result of the day, touching the wall fourth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 26.52 seconds. Meanwhile, Sykes claimed fifth place in the 400 individual medley, clocking in at 4:41.10. 

The sophomore Pawlak was also part of the Engineers' seventh-place 200-yard freestyle relay squad (1:39.44), along with Lexi Clark (Easton, MD), Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH). 

Jenn Brownell (Spring, TX) had two top 10 finishes, finishing ninth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.66) and 10th in the 50 backstroke (28.72), while Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) won the B final of the 50-yard backstroke (28.76). 

Olivia Petropulos (Hollis, NH) earned WPI points by coming in 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.04, as did Julia Noel (Beverly, MA), who pocketed seventh place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 341.55. 

Brownell, Petropulos, Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and Pawlak formed the Engineers top grouping in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing in 4:04.31. 

The hosts also had two top 10 squads in the mixed 400-yard medley relay, as Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH), John Puksta (Nashua, NH), Brownell and Wang came in ninth (3:48.08), followed by the team of Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY), Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY), Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) and Pawlak (10th, 3:49.42).  

The grouping of Staubi, Puksta, Pawlak and Hazeltine claimed 10th place in the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:33.60. 

The final day of the Gompei Invitational will begin with the preliminaries races Sunday morning at 9am followed by the finals starting at 5pm.
