Clemente Keys Women's Swimming and Diving Third Place Show in Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER -- Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) highlighted five individual top 10 performances for host WPI women's swimming and diving as host WPI women's swimming and diving on the third and final day of action in the seventh annual Gompei Invitational.  

Team scoring in the meet is a combination of points earned by each men's and women's programs.  The Engineers combined to amassed 4,069 points to edge Division II Bentley (4,028.50 points) for third place.  Division I Bryant took home the team crown with 6,640 points while Rowan (4,765) placed second and Roger Williams (2,890.50) rounded out the top five in the 13-team meet. 

Clemente was sixth in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:11.82 while Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) was ninth in 2:18.86.  Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) (16th - 2:16.73) and Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY) (18th - 2:15.23) also swam well in the event.  

The Crimson and Gray also had a pair in the championship finals of the 100-yard IM.  Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) placed seventh in 1:03.11 and Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AL) finished tenth with a time of 1:03.68.  Points were plentiful in the event for WPI as Monika Nowak (Longmeadow, MA) and Brianna Owen (Harleysville, PA) was 12th (1:03.85) and 14th (1:05.06) respectively, and Olivia Petropulos (Hollis, NH) won the C final (1:05.49). 

Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) touched the wall eighth in 50-yard breaststroke with Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) turning in a 15th place of 32.12. 

Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) was WPI's top finisher in the 100-yard freestyle.  The sophomore was 12th with a time of 53.92.  Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) was the Engineers best in the 500-yard freestyle (13th - 5:14.92) while Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) had the honor in the 200-yard backstroke (14th - 2:13.09). 

Arguably the Engineers best showing Sunday came in the 400-yard freestyle where the A quartet of Sykes, Clement, Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) and Pawlak were fourth in a time of 3:34.80 and the B relay of Carol Wang (Framingham, MA), Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME), Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) and Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY). 

WPI is off until mid-January.  They will travel to the Mid-Atlantic region and compete at Rowan on Saturday, January 18th along with Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore and at Stevens on Sunday, January 19th.
