Williams, 200 Free Relay Excel for Men's Swimming and Diving on Day Two of NEWMACs

Cambridge, MA --- Sid Williams (Fairfax, VA), Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH), Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) and Donald Buglino (Titusville, NJ) all collected top 10 individual finishes for the WPI men's swimming and diving team as the Engineers participated on day 2 of the NEWMAC Championships at MIT.  

Overall on the day, the Crimson and Gray moved up a spot to third overall with 300 points.   MIT leads the seven-team event with 519 points while Coast Guard is second with 400.  

Williams turned in the best individual placement on the day for WPI, finishing sixth in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.67.  His morning preliminary time of 20.65 will put him in the hunt for position NCAA championship selection.  Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) captured the consolation final, touching the wall in a time of 21.15.     

Denbow was seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.13.  The Boynton Hillers racked up points in the B finals with Peter Fagerholm (Newtown, CT) in 13th (1:55.41),John Puksta (Nashua, NH) in 14th (1:55.88) and Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD) in 18th (1:59.24). 

Zimmermann and Buglino were back-to-back in the 500 freestyle, finishing eighth and ninth clocking times of 4:40.34 and 4:42.69.  Matthew Shriner (Arlington, MA) and Henry Buda (Laurel, MD) finished consecutively in the consolation final, placing second (4:41.99) and third (4:42.43) respectively. 

In relays, Williams, Besch, Fagerholm and Puksta earned bronze in the 200 yard freestyle (1:22.60), while the B relay of Jehu De la Rosa (Mission, TX) Buglino, Scholz and Zimmermann was also third in their heat with a time of 1:26.42.   In the 400 medley relay, the A relay comprised Williams, Denbow, Besch and Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) took third place (3:20.82), just missing silver by 0.04 seconds.  The B relay composed of Fagerholm, Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA), Shriner and Puksta tallied a third place showing in the consolation final (4:01.20). 

Day three begins with the prelims on Saturday at 10am, followed by the finals session at 6pm. The events for Saturday include the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 200 medley relay.
