Clemente, Sykes Star for Women’s Swimming and Diving on Day Three of NEWMACs

Cambridge, MA --- Seven top-10 finishes highlight day three of the NEWMAC Championships at MIT including a podium effort by Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) in the 200 Free and a school record time by Molly Sykes (Falmouth, ME) in the 400 IM. 

The strong Saturday performance bumped the Engineers from sixth place to fourth place with 448 total points. Host MIT leads the meet with 905.50 points, followed by Wheaton with 582.  Sunday will be fun as four teams are closely-matched between third and sixth.  Wellesley enters the final day in third (446.50) while Springfield is fifth (413) and Coast Guard sixth (355.50). 

Sykes raced to a school record time of 4:34.81 for a fifth place finish in the individual medley while Clemente finished in third place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:55.41 adding 20 points to the Engineers' total while Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) swam to a sixth place finish in 1:56.39 alongside her teammate. 

Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) earned her spot in the 'A' Final of the 100 Fly where she touched the wall in seventh place while both Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) and Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) took eighth (1:07.49) and 10th (1:08.17) respectively in the 100 Breast final. 

Jenn Brownell (Spring, TX) rounded out the individual events with a ninth place finish in the 100 Back with a time of 59:80 before the 200 Medley Relay team took to the pool where the foursome of Brownell, Silsby, Wang, and Pawlak earned a fifth place finish in a time of 1:48.22. 

Important points were earned by the Crimson and Gray in the consolation finals.  Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) finished fourth (4:46.05) in the 400 IM while Olivia Hanson placed fifth (4:46.66) (Anchorage, AK), Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY) seventh (4:48.03) and Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) ninth (4:49.43).  Anne Hughes (Woodbury, NJ) was ninth (1:00.74) in the 100 fly while Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) and Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) placed seventh (1:59.33) and ninth (2:00.16) respectively in the 200 free. 

Also gaining valuable points for the Engineers in the consolation finals were Olivia Petropulos (Hollis, NH) (third - 1:08.10) and Edwardson (sixth - 1:09.27) in the 100 breast, Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) (fifth - 59.97) and Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) (10th - 1:01.54) in the 100 back and the 200 medley relay of Seo, Edwardson, Clemente and Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) (fourth - 1:51.37).

The fourth and final day of the NEWMAC championships begins with the preliminaries on Sunday at 10am, followed by the finals session at 6pm. The events include the 1650 free, the 200 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly, 1-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay.
