Men’s Indoor Track and Field Wins Third Straight Tartan Invitational

Northampton, MA --- The Men's Indoor Track and Field team won the Tartan Invitational for the third year in a row on Saturday. WPI scored 255.50 as they defeated Amherst (205), American International (87), Lasell (31), St. Joseph's (26), CCRI (16) and Assumption (14.50).

Junior Matt Whitman (Holden, MA) raced to a 6.71 to win the 55-meter dash and in the process add his name to the list of New England Division III Championship qualifiers.

In the 200-meter dash Ditton Kawalya (Kanbala, Uganda), Timothy Forrest (Madison, CT), and Whitman grabbed fourth through sixth place with times of 24.08, 24.27 and 24.38, respectively.

Ryan Shooshan (Paxton, MA) ran to a sixth place spot as he posted a 52.25 in the 400-meter dash.

The 600-meter run was won by Stephen Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) in a time of 1:26.23, while Dominic Gonzalez (Lowell, MA) placed third in the 800-meter run (2:03.01) and Lane Thornton (Richmond, VT) took third in the 1,000-meter run (2:38.12).

In the mile run Jeremy Francisco (Dartmouth, MA) led the way for the Engineers with a fifth place showing in a time of 4:34.74.

Scott Burger (South Huntington, NY) registered a 9:28.53 sixth-place showing in the 3,000-meter run.

Senior Daniel Richie (Pepperell, MA) paced all WPI runners with a seventh place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:30.48.

In the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Forrest, and senior Kyle Diaz (Sturbridge, MA) came in first (8.27) and second (8.28) as each improved on their New England Division III qualifying mark.

The team of Kocienski, Ryan Shooshan (Paxton, MA), Whitman and Kawalya won the 4x200 relay in a time of 1:34.63 as the 4x400 relay foursome of Kocienski, Shooshan, Josh Matte (Litchfield, NH) and Stephen Madamba (West Springfield, MA) finished second (3:35.26).

The 4,000-meter distance medley quartet of Shane Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY), Brad Bailey (Sandwich, MA), Billy Hawkins (Dartmouth, MA) and Burger defeated their only opponents from Lasell with a time of 11:45.73.

In the high jump Nick Everett (Natick, MA) posted a third-place 1.81m, while Kyle Morette (Leominster, MA) finished third in the pole vault as he cleared 3.05 meters.

Leading the way for WPI in the long jump and triple jump was Edmund Eduah (Accra, Ghana). The freshman placed second in the triple jump (12.44) and third in the long jump (6.09).

Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) improved on his qualifying efforts in the shot put and weight throw events.  His 13.55 won the shot put, while the 15.81 in the weight throw was second place.

Men's Indoor Track and Field heads to the MIT and BU Invitationals on Saturday.
