Medford, MA --- The WPI men's indoor track and field team competed at the Tufts Invitational II and the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Saturday. The meet at BU featured competition from institutions all over the country and all three NCAA divisions were represented.
At the Tufts Invitational, Edmund Eduah (Accra, Ghana) led the Engineers in the 60-meter dash with a 7.46 for fifth place overall in the event. Steven Madamba (West Springfield, MA), Saul Garcia (Boston, MA) and J.P. Correia (Woburn, MA) finished seventh (7.60), eighth (7.66) and ninth (7.82), respectively.
Ed Mercer (Barrington, RI) posted a 56.86 (seventh) in the 400-meter dash, while Brad Bailey (Sandwich, MA) took second in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:30.35.
WPI runners Mark Vanacore (Westboro, MA), Mason Andruskiewicz (Preston, MA) and Robert Hollinger (Averill Park, NY) were the only entrants in the 1,000-meter run and recorded times of 2:54.97, 2:54.98 and 2:55.58.
In the mile run, Jon Gay (Charlton, MA) was fourth (4:49.22) as Keegan Westwater (North Andover, MA), Likuvi Chebelyon (Ledyard, CT) and Vanacore claimed sixth through eighth.
Scott Burger (South Huntington, NY) completed the 3,000 meter run in 19th (9:23.07). Daniel Ritchie (Pepperell, MA) followed in 22nd (9:28.39) just ahead of Shane Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY) (23rd - 9:30.73). Hollinger crossed the finish line in 27th (9:41.74), while the quartet of Craig Mitchell (Hanson, MA), Brian Goodman (Colonie, NY), Mike Boucher (East Lyme, CT) and Hunter Putzke (Waterloo, WI) were 31st (9:59.51), 32nd (10:03.66), 33rd (10:07.84) and 34th (10:28.30).
The 60-meter hurdles had four entrants from Boynton Hill, Cory Adams (Northboro, MA) finished fifth (9.25), Mike Thyden (Sutton, MA) was seventh (9.37), Drew Martin (Hingham, MA) came in eighth (9.41) and Frank Carnevale (Rutherford, NJ) was ninth (9.51).
Nick Everett (Natick, MA) won the high jump as he soared 5-11.25. Sixth, seventh and eighth places went to Matija Zelic (Westboro, MA), Madamba and Thyden as they cleared 5-7.25.
Zelic leaped to a third place showing in the long jump (20-3.75) as Thyden posted 19-7, Eduah recorded 19-4 and Kevin McCarthy (Wakefield, MA) notched 17-6.
In the triple jump, Eduah was third (40-5.5) followed by McCarthy (38-7), Correia (38-2.75) and Martin (37-10) in fifth through seventh.
Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) launched the shot put 44-10.75 for second place, while Chris Farren (Plaistow, NH) and Gary Feldman Jr (Ellington, CT) put up a 42-2.25 and 40-7 in fifth and sixth. Sam Lalezari (Saco, ME) cracked the top 10 with a ninth place toss of 37-9.50. Jeff Rosen (Easton, MA) finished 11th (34-0) and Thomas Ligouri (Westerly, RI) was 14th (31-10.75).
The weight throw found Baker in second (52-2). Also in the weight throw was Farren (fifth – 49-7), Ligouri (ninth – 46-0.50), Feldman (11th – 43-7.75), Rosen (13th – 38-2) and Lalezari (15th – 33-11.25).
Over at Boston University, Stephen Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) finished the 400-meter dash in 64th with 50.46. Ryan Shooshan (Paxton, MA) followed in 67th (50.54).
Finishing 76th in the 200-meter dash was Matt Whitman (Holden, MA) with a time of 23.23. Kocienski ran a 23.46 for 98th and Shooshan's 23.52 was 105th.
Jeremy Francisco (Dartmouth, MA) was 122nd (4:30.74) in the mile run, while Lane Thornton (Richmond, VT) completed the event 152nd (4:38.18).
In the 800-meter run, Josh Matte (Litchfield, NH) crossed the finish line 125th (2:01.03) ahead of Greg McConnell (Georgia, VT) in 149th (2:03.89).
Billy Hawkins (Dartmouth, MA) and Dominic Gonzalez (Lowell, MA) posted 68th (2:38.94) and 69th (2:39.01) place times in the 1,000-meter run.
Men's indoor track and field heads to Springfield for the New England Division III Championships on Friday and Saturday.
