Springfield, MA --- Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) and Lane Thornton (Richmond, VT) combined to win three events as Men's Track and Field placed third in a tri-meet with Springfield and Coast Guard on Saturday. Springfield won the meet scoring 185.5 points followed by Coast Guard with 122.50 and WPI with 94.
Baker registered a 185-11 to win the javelin and took the hammer throw with a toss of 167-9, while Thornton crossed the finish line first in the 1,500-meter run with a 4:09.91.
Following Baker in the hammer throw were Gary Feldman (Ellington, CT) and Chris Farren (Plaistow, NH) who recorded third (155-4) and fourth (151-4) place distances, while TJ Ligouri (Westerly, RI) and Jeffrey Rosen (Easton, MA) placed fifth (145-5) and sixth (137-11) as WPI claimed five of the seven scoring opportunities.
Tim Forrest (Madison, CT) (16.30), Cory Adams (Northboro, MA) (16.94), and Drew Martin (Hingham, MA) (17.87) finished second through fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, while Kyle Diaz (Sturbridge, MA) and Mike Thyden (Sutton, MA) tied for fifth (18.38).
Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) cleared 6-1.25 and Nick Everett (Natick, MA) leapt 5-9.25 as they grabbed second and sixth places in the high jump.
Feldman was second in the discus (121-5) followed by Ligouri with a 116-1 in fifth. Farren launched the shot put 42-4 in a third place effort.
The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of Josh Matte (Litchfield, NH), Ed Mercer (Barrington, RI), Greg McConnell (Georgia, VT) and Grant Raymond (Amherst, NH) received third place points for their 3:39.16 effort.
In the 400-meter dash Kyle Morette (Leominster, MA) placed third and Scott Woodnorth (Milwaukee, WI) seized sixth place (53.23). Morette was also second in the pole vault (13-3) in a field comprised of the junior and five entries from Coast Guard.
Stephen Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) was third in both the 100-meter dash (12.02) and 200-meter dash (23.57).
In the steeplechase, Shane Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY) finished fourth (10:14.11) and Scott Burger (South Huntington, NY) completed the race in fifth (10:21.86).
J.P. Correia (Woburn, MA) and Matija Zelic (Westboro, MA) helped the Engineers with fifth (19-9) and sixth (19-7.50) place distances in the long jump, while Forrest finished fourth in the triple jump (40-4.25).
Likuvi Chebelyon (Ledyard, CT) was the highest placing Engineer in the 800-meter run with a 2:06.93, while Matte completed the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.82 for seventh. Jeremy Francisco (Dartmouth, MA) paced the Crimson and Gray in the 5,000-meter run with an eighth-place 16:12.89.
Select Men's Track and Field athletes will compete this week at Holy Cross on Wednesday and Thursday and the full team will head back to Springfield on Saturday.
