Cambridge, MA --- Mike Thyden (Sutton, MA) began the competition with a second place finish in the decathlon, while Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) and Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) each turned in a pair of All-New England performances as WPI Men's Track and Field competed at the Division III New England Championships at MIT that ran from Thursday to Saturday. WPI finished 12th with 23.50 points as Williams edged out MIT to win with 151 points.
Thyden's All-New England effort saw the junior jump three spots from the end of day one to complete the decathlon in second place with 5575 points. Thyden's highlights include third place in the 1,500-meter run (4:46.15), 110-meter hurdles (17.54) and long jump (19-10.75).
Baker tossed the javelin 181-7 and the hammer 172-10 for fifth spot in both events. Gary Feldman Jr. (Ellington, CT) was 14th in the hammer with a heave of 153-8.
DeChristofaro cleared 6-2 in the high jump to take fifth place and recorded a 44-2 for eighth in the triple jump.
Stephen Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) tied for sixth (49.87) in the 400-meter dash to round out the All-New England performers. Teammate Kyle Morette (Leominster, MA) crossed the finish line less than half a second later for 13th (50.16) and placed 11th in the pole vault with a height of 13-11.25.
Also representing WPI in the competition was Tim Forrest (Madison, CT) in the 110-meter high hurdle preliminaries (10th - 15.76), Mitch Giroux (Dighton, MA) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (14th - 9:57.47) and Shane Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (23rd - 10:15.95).
Men's Track and Field is back in action at Southern Connecticut as qualified athletes will compete in the All-New England Championships on Friday and Saturday.
