New London, CT --- Joey Collins (Standish, ME) won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.48 to lead the WPI Men's Track and Field team to a second-place finish at a tri-meet Saturday at Coast Guard with Springfield.
Collins also placed second in the 400 meter dash, clocking a 50.01. He ran the first leg of the 4x100 meter relay team, joined by Austin Holliday (Danville, CA), Matt Whitman (Holden, MA) and Ditton Kawalya (Bugolobi, Uganda). The team finished second with a time of 43.63. Collins also led the 4x400 team to a time of 3:30.29, placing them in second place. He was joined by Nick Aleles (Tappan, NY), Tim Forrest (Madison, CT) and Kyle Morette (Leominster, MA).
Other winners for the Crimson and Gray included Jameel Galloway (Randolph, MA), posting a leap of 6-3.2 5in the high jump. Morette took first in the pole vault, clearing 14-6. Chris Farren's (Plaistow, NH) throw of 161-9 in the hammer throw was best on the day.
Second-place finishers included Kawalya, who clocked an 11.22 in the 100 meter dash. Forrest had a time of 15.60 in the 110 meter hurdles, while Gary Feldman Jr.'s (Ellington, CT) throw of 161-3 was just a half foot behind Farren's heave.
Several Engineers placed third in their events, with Kawalya placing third in the 200 meter dash (22.88) as did Josh Brodin (Mansfield, MA) in the 5000 meter run (16:08.16). Jay Giambarresi (Amesbury, MA) finished third in the 110 meter hurdles (16.09), and Andrew Zayac's (Plymouth, MA) had a 9:44.84 in the 3000 steeplechase. Others included Tristan Richardson (Attleboro Falls, MA) in the high jump (5-11.25), Charles Plummer (Westboro, MA) in the pole vault (12-11.5), Ben Altshuler (Ellenville, NY) in the triple jump (41-3.25), Nate Martel (Standish, ME) in the shot put (44-3.50) and Feldman in the discus throw (134-7).
Mike Thyden (Sutton, MA), who is currently in fifth place at the Tufts Decathlonl wraps up competition tomorrow while the rest of the team gears up for the Fitchburg State Invitational on Saturday, April 21st.
