Claremont, CA --- Senior Emily Pearce (Avon, CT) concluded her career with a 15th place showing in the pole vault on Saturday afternoon as the WPI Track and Field program wrapped up its trip to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in suburban Los Angeles.
Pearce cleared 3.40 and 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7.75 inches) without a miss before going out of the event at 3.70 meters. The senior, a four-year, two-sport (field hockey) standout who was participating in her first NCAA Championships event after securing a place as a result of last week's performance at the ECAC championships, tied for 15th with Katie Yeager (West Covina, CA) from nearby La Verne. Catherine Street (Wilsonville, OR) of Linfield edged out defending champion Abigail Schaffer (Easton, PA) of Moravian for the title with a height of 13-9.25.
Pearce's 15th place showing came a day after junior Julie Eagle (Rock Island, IL) finished 10th in the women's high jump (5-5.75), junior Noelle Richard (Oxford, MA) placed 19th in the women's 400 meters (57.86) and junior Jameel Galloway (Randolph, MA) participated in the men's high jump. On Thursday night junior Vicky Hewey (Sanford, ME) was 19th in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:15.31).
WPI will open up its 2012-2013 indoor season next December at Springfield and its outdoor season late next March in the Worcester City Meet.
