Naperville, IL --- WPI sprinter Noelle Richard (Oxford, MA) placed 11th in the preliminary heats of the 400-meter dash on Friday evening at the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by North Central College.
The 11th place showing marked the best overall finish for the senior, who was competing in her third indoor championships and fifth overall. Richard was third in her heat, registering a season-best time of 58.04. Her heat was won by the fastest runner on Friday - Mary Mahoney of Mount Union whose time of 55.46 was nearly a second better than the second best time turned in by Wheaton's Ashante Little. The top two finishers of each of the three heat plus the next two best times qualify for Saturday's finals and are assured All-America status.
"Noelle did a tremendous job battling through a hamstring injury all season and getting to this meet was an accomplishment in and of itself," stated head coach Brian Chabot. "While I know Noelle had loftier goals for this meet, she will benefit from the experience and have a great outdoor season."
Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) makes her NCAA Championships debut for the Engineers on Saturday. The sophomore, who is seeded fourth, competes in the high jump beginning at noon EST.
