Springfield, MA --- Senior Julie Eagle (Rock Island, IL) set a new school record and was victorious in the high jump at the NEWMAC Championships for the second time in three years as she propelled the WPI Women's Track and Field team a fourth place showing Saturday afternoon at Springfield. As the team, the Crimson and Gray racked up 91 points, just 10.5 points behind third place Springfield. MIT won the meet with 228.50 points.
Eagle and teammate Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) gave the Engineers a 1-2 showing in the high jump with heights of 5-7.75 and 5-6 respectively. Their performances earned them All-NEWMAC honors in the event. Other second place finishes for WPI included Noelle Richard (Oxford, MA) in the 400 meters (58.26) and Vicky Hewey (Sanford, ME) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:34.49). With the second place finishes, both Richard and Hewey earned All-NEWMAC accolades. Richard also ran 26.06 to earn a fourth place spot in the 200.
The Engineer 4x400 relay made up of Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA), Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA), Kelsie Lazaro (Somerset, MA) and Richard earned the third place spot with a time of 4:01.67. Pellegrini posted a third place finish in the 400 hurdles crossing the line at 1:04.91.
Other notable performances include fifth place finishes by Kate Piotrowicz (Kensington, CT) in the hammer (133-03) and Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) in the javelin (113-07). The 4x100 relay team of Rhinehart, Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA), Lazaro and N. Richard also earned a fifth place finish on the day.
The WPI track and field team returns to action for the New England DIII Championships next Friday for day one of a two day affair at Colby.
