Springfield, MA --- Junior Nicholas Aleles (Tappan, NY) and senior Robert Hollinger (Averill Park, NY) each secured a victory as the WPI men's track and field team placed third at the Springfield Invitational to open the 2013-14 campaign on Saturday. The Engineers posted 131 points as host Springfield won the meet with 176 points. Westfield State was second (135) while Rhode Island College shored up the field with 94.
Aleles won 600-meter run in a time of 1:27.09 as Hollinger struck gold (16:01) in the 5,000-meter run as junior Joe Kelly (Brooklyn Park, MN) was second (16:10.36) and senior Hunter Putzke (Waterloo, WI) crossed the finish line third (16:10.89). Senior Keegan Westwater (North Andover, MA), who will graduate in two weeks, finished his career with a fourth-place time in the mile run (4:37.28) and anchored the 4x400-meter A relay team's 3:38.13 effort.
Earning second place finishes were senior Tim Forrest (Madison, CT) in the 60-meter hurdles (8.68), senior Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) in the long jump (21-06.75), freshman David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) in the 800-meter run (2:05.61) and sophomore Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) in the 1,000-meter run (2:41.88) and the 4x800-meter relay team consisting of Goodrich, freshman Austin Scott (Waddington, NY), Roy and junior Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) with a time of 8:30.74.
Scott was a fraction of a second ahead of Westwater in the mile run as he clocked a third-place 4:36.86. Senior Gary Feldman (Ellington, CT) added a third place showing in the weight throw (49-09.25) while graduate student Jameel Galloway (Randolph, MA) was third in the high jump (6-02).
The 4x200 relay team comprised of freshman Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT), Forrest, freshman Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) and freshman Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) edged out the team of sophomore Julian Dano (Merrimack, NH), freshman Andrew Dunne (Westford, MA), freshman Daniel Ruiz-Cadalso (Guaynambo, Puerto Rico) and senior Grant Raymond (Amherst, NH) by .26 seconds to take third place as the squads turned in times of 1:37.65 and 1:37.91, respectively.
Dennis, Ruiz-Cadalso, Forrest and sophomore Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) completed the 4x400 (third - 3:38.19) with a sizable advantage over the quartet of Santangleo, Aleles, Raymond and Westwater. Mercier also raced to a fourth-place 23.78 in the 200-meter dash while Dano was fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.28) edging freshman Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) by .006 seconds. Dano's preliminary time of 7.18 established a new school record as he bested the 7.21 turned in by Matt Whitman '12 back in 2011.
The men's track and field team is off until Saturday, January 18 when the squad travels to the Bowdoin Invitational for a 1pm start.
