New London, CT -- The WPI men's track and field team won its first meet of the season Saturday at the Coast Guard Invitational, taking first place as a team with 147.5 points, which gave them a 13.5-point edge over 2nd-place Westfield State and a 40.5-point advantage over the host Bears in third.
The Crimson and Gray showed well across the board, winning three events and placing top three in seven others.
Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) gave WPI its first victory in the long jump (21-6.75). Edmund Eduah (Accra, Ghana) kept the strong run in field events going with a victory in the triple jump (42-11.75). John deRivera (West Boylston, MA) was the top finisher in the javelin (180-4), while fellow Engineer Zac Chupka (Douglas, MA) snagged third (167-7). Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) was third in the triple jump (40-2), while Jules Voltaire (Woburn, MA) took fourth in triple jump (39-11.25) and fifth in long jump (19-4.25)
Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) posted a strong result for the Crimson and Gray early on, grabbing second in the 100-meter dash (11.26). Later on in the meet Tim Forrest (Madison, CT) did the same, finishing runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.48. The Engineers' 4x400 relay team gave them another second-place finish (3:33.82), while the 'B' team took fourth in 3:42.72.
Freshman Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT) (23.23) snagged third in the 200-meter dash, with Forrest (5th, 23.33) and Mercier (6th, 23.35) coming in soon after.
Gary Feldman (Ellington, CT) claimed third in the hammer throw (150-6) with teammates Jason Beauregard (New Bedford, MA) (5th, 141-1) and Harry Lanphear (Manchester, ME) (6th, 138-2) also placing well.
Feldman grabbed fourth in the discus (115-6), coming in ahead of Lanphear (5th, 114-9) and Sam Lalezari (Saco, ME) (7th, 108-4).
Rounding out the top 10 finishers for the Crimson and Gray were Nathan Varney (East Longmeadow, MA) in the 800-meter (8th, 2:01.13), Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) in the 100-meter (8th, 11.56), Roy in the 400-meter (10th, 53.02). Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) to 10th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.02), while Dalton came in right behind him (11th, 1:02.07).
Additionally WPI had athletes compete Saturday in the 10,000 meters at the Tufts Snowflake Classic. Robert Hollinger (Averill Park, NY) clinched his spot in the All-New England All Divisions Championships with a seventh place time of 32:30.43 while Hunter Putzke (Waterloo, WI) qualifed for the New England Division III Championships with a time of 33:07.43 to place 10th.
WPI is back in action next Saturday, April 5, taking part in the Engineers Cup at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, starting that day at 1pm.
