Mercier Sets 100 Record as Men's Track and Field Scores Tri-Meet Victory

New London, CT --- The WPI men's track and field team claimed six victories and 10 second-place finished to pull ahead for the tri-meet victory Saturday at Coast Guard, amassing 168 points to edge the host Bears (141.50) and Springfield College (88.50).

Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) highlighted the day for the Crimson and Gray, setting the school record in the 100-meter dash with a blazing first-place time of 10.89 seconds. He finished just ahead of teammate Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) (2nd place, 10.97) as the Engineers posted four of the top five finishers.

Other solo victories for WPI included Edmund Eduah (Accra, Ghana) in the triple jump (45-6.25), Jameel Galloway (Randolph, MA) in the high jump (6-6), Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) in the discus (126-2), and Dominic Gonzalez (Lowell, MA) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:04.02). 

WPI's final victory came in the 4x400 relay where Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT), Nicholas Aleles (Tappan, NY), Daniel Ruiz-Cadalso (Guaynambo, Puerto Rico), and Joey Collins (Standish, ME) teamed to take first in 3:23.29.

Eduah also showed up elsewhere, taking third in the 100 dash (11.07), and helping WPI to a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay (43.65), where he joined Mercier, Whelan, and Austin Holliday (Danville, CA).

Mercier was also the top WPI runner in the 200-meter dash, taking second (22.46), followed closely by Collins (3rd, 22.74) and Holliday (22.79).

Aleles was the second-place finisher in the 400-meter with a time of 50.22. He nosed past teammates Collins (3rd, 50.44) and Holliday (51.17).

Other second-place finishers included Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) in the 400-meter hurdles (59.95), Daniel Stomski (Dudley, MA) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:27.44), Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) in the triple jump (43-3.25), Connor Morette (Leominster, MA) in pole vault (13-1.50), Chad Dellaporta (Billerica, MA) in shot put (42-5.50), and Matt Butler (Lincoln, RI) in the hammer throw (150-3).

Butler was also third in shot put (42-4.25), while DeChristofaro took a third-place finish in high jump (6-00.00).

Nathan Varney (East Longmeadow, MA) was WPI's top performer in the 800-meter (4th, 2:01.58). WPI had a pair of back-to-back finishes in the long-distance events, first in the 1,500-meter, where Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) (4th, 4:003.31) edged Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) (5th, 4:06.26), and in the 5,000-meter where Robert Hollinger (Averill Park, NY) (4th, 15:44.81) came in ahead of Nathan Stomberg (W. Greenwich, RI) (5th, 15:59.65).

Jules Voltaire (Woburn, MA) was WPI best finisher in the long jump (6th, 19-10.25) and also finished third in the triple jump (42-3.25).

John deRivera (West Boylston, MA) claimed fifth for the Engineers in the javelin (146-0).

WPI will be back in action next Saturday, competing at the Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet at Fitchburg State, which kicks off at 10:30am.
