Delaware, OH --- The WPI Track and Field program was busy Thursday during the opening day of the 2014 NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan. The women's 4x100 meter relay team placed 13th while 400 meter hurdler Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) finished 14th and Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) competed in the men's long jump.
The relay quartet of Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA), Pellegrini, Alex Price (Franklin, MA) and Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) posted a time of 48.10 and was seventh in a tightly-bunch heat that saw teams fourth through eighth separated by less than fourth tenths of a second. A solid lean by Harris at the finish line helped the Crimson and Gray edge Cal Lutheran by a razor-thin six thousands of a second.
Just an hour after participating in the relay, Pellegrini ran in one of the strongest and deepest events of the championships. The sophomore registered a time of 1:02.28 to finish sixth in her heat. All three heat winners boasted a time of under a minute with Ashante Little of conference rival Wheaton besting her all-time NCAA Division III record time with a 58.51 to win the preliminaries.
DeChristofaro capped an outstanding collegiate career with a leap of 21-5.50 on his final jump of the day. The senior is a returning All-Academic America, who was named NEWMAC Field Athlete of the Year in 2013 and earned 15 All-New England honors in his four years.
Two-time high jump All-America Julie Eagle (Rock Island, IL) takes center stage for the Crimson and Gray on Friday. The graduate student, who tied for second at last year's outdoor championships and was third as this year's indoor championships, begins her event at 2pm.
