Brunswick, ME --- The 4x800-meter relay team set a new school record and the 4x200-meter relay team broke the meet record as the WPI women's track and field team came home second at the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday.
No. 3 MIT accumulated 283 points in the victory while the Boynton Hillers posted 105. The hosts (95) followed in third as Springfield (56) was fourth, RPI (41) was fifth and Colby-Sawyer (4) was sixth.
The 4x800 team of Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA), Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH), Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) and Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) turned in a second-place 9:52.36 to better the school record by nearly eight seconds while the foursome of Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA), Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) and Alex Price (Franklin, MA) improved the 4x200 meet record with a time of 1:48.06. Both relays are currently eligible for the ECAC Division III Championships.
Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT), who entered the weekend with the top performance in Division III, won her second high jump title in as many meets as she cleared 5-4.25. Strangio won the 400-meter dash with a DIII NE qualifying time of 1:02.64 and was followed by Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) in third (1:03.53).
Tevenan clocked a second-place 2:22.02 to qualify for the DIII NE and ECAC championships in the 800-meter run. Pumphrey, already eligible to compete in all three regional postseason meet in the 60-meter hurdles, finished second (9.42) while Pellegrini turned in a third-place time of 9.45 and Justine Sherman (Boulder, CO) posted a fifth-place 9.86 to join Pumphrey in the DIII NE event. Pellegrini's time also gained entry in the ECAC Championship meet. Katie McManus (North Andover, MA) delivered a DIII NE performance in the shot put (36-4.25) while Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) rounded out the qualifiers as she improved on her DIII NE distance with a 34-5.75 in the triple jump.
The 4x400-meter relay quartet of Velleca, Pellegrini, Price and Rhinehart combined to place second with a 4:14.24. Caitlin Walde (Edmonds, WA) was fourth in the 3,000-meter run (11:18.57) and Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) was fifth (11:20.18). Velleca added a fourth-place effort in the 200-meter dash (27.41) while Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) followed in sixth (27.78). The Engineers also went fourth and sixth in the 600-meter run as LaRoche clocked a 1:44.87 and Kelsie Lazaro (Somerset, MA) turned in a 1:49.47.
Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) crossed the finish line fourth in the 5,000-meter run (20:40.73) and Capobianco was fifth in the 1,000-meter run (3:14.42). Rhinehart and Richard also pitched in with sixth-place performances in the 60-meter dash (8.23) and long jump (15-6.75), respectively.
WPI heads to Western Mass. on Saturday for the Smith Invitational.
