Boston, MA --- Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) broke the school record in the mile as WPI Women's Track and Field faced competition from all three NCAA divisions and more at the Boston University Scarlet and White Invitational on Saturday.
Tevenan set the new standard in the distance event with an 11th-place 5:06.49 while Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) turned in a personal-best 9.23 in the 60-meter hurdles to win her heat and finish 13th overall. Justine Sherman (Boulder, CO) followed in 20th (9.66). National high jump leader Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) placed second among Division III competition and was in a three-way tie for fourth overall with a height of 5-3.
Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) turned in a seventh-place time in the 500-meter dash (1:19.02) while Caitlin Walde (Edmonds, WA) and Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) came home 13th in the 3,000-meter run (11:19.27) and triple jump (33-7.5), respectively. Katie McManus (North Andover, MA) was 18th in the shot put (33-10.75) and Sarah Muse (Rye, NH) added a 19th-place showing in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet.
Just outside the top 20 were Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) who was 21st in the 60-meter dash (8.13) and Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH) who claimed 23rd in the 1,000-meter run (3:09.07). Pellegrini also clocked a 59.59 to finish 26th in the 400-meter dash and a 25.77 for 45th in the 200-meter dash while Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) posted a 2:28.57 for 41st in the 800-meter run.
Women's Track and Field returns to Boston University on Friday for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational beginning at 2pm.
