Boston, MA --- Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) reset his own school record in the 1,000-meter run and qualified for the All-New England championship meet as the WPI men's track and field team was put to the test at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday.
Roy crossed the finish line in a time of 2:26.96 to secure an entry in the third of three upcoming regional championship meets. He was followed by Patrick Murphy (Danvers, MA) with a 2:39. The mile run saw Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) better his Division III New England time with a converted time of 4:23.33 (4:20). Andrew Zayac (Plymouth, MA) was a fraction of a second behind and qualified for the DIII NE and ECAC meets with a 4:20.44. Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA), meanwhile, turned in a 4:23.75 for the Engineers.
The trio of Warren Staver (Centreville, MD), Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT) and Joey Collins (Standish, ME) all improved their DIII NE times in the 400-meter dash with a 49.76, 50.07 and 50.19, respectively. Also competing in the 400 were Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) (51.39), Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) (52.93) and Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) (53.02).
Early on in the session, Austin Holliday (Danville, CA) just missed his own school record in the 60-meter dash with a 7.12 while Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) turned in a 7.29. D'Amore and Schoenhagen narrowly joined Holliday (22.47) in the DIII NE 200-meter dash with times of 22.84 and 22.93.
David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) clocked his indoor personal best time of 1:59.96 in the 800-meter run as the 4x400m relay of Holliday, Dennis, Staver and Collins ended the day with a heat-winning time of 3:19.23.
Shawn Ferrini (Norton, MA) (40-5) and Dalton (30-9.75) competed in the shot put and Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) represented the Crimson and Gray in the high jump (6-2.75). Connor Morette (Leominster, MA) cleared 13-11.25 in the pole vault while Ferrini launched the weight throw 45-4.25.
Men's Track and Field heads West for this weekend's New England Division III Championships hosted by Springfield.
