Northampton, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team racked up 10 All-New England honors, highlighted by a pair of third place finishes and two school records on Saturday to finish 11th at the Division III New England Championships hosted by Smith. MIT won the team title with 151 points as the Crimson and Gray posted 29.
Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) broke her own record in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:01.48 to finish third in the event. She was followed by Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH) and Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) in 13th (3:07.27) and 17th (3:20.94), respectively. Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) cleared 5-5 in the high jump to place third while Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) boasted a time of 1:38.68 to place eighth and set the program record in the 600-meter run.
The 4x200-meter relay team of Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), Alex Price (Franklin, MA), Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) and Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME) placed fifth (1:46.40) while the 4x400 quartet of Velleca, Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA) Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) and Harris finished sixth (4:03.01). Pumphrey and Pellegrini took sixth (9.28) and seventh (9.42) in the 60-meter hurdles while Justine Sherman (Boulder, CO) clocked a 19th-place 9.76 in the preliminaries.
Velleca and Harris posted the seventh (26.38) and eighth (26.53) best times in the 200-meter dash as the duo of Price and Rhinehart followed in 18th (27.16) and 19th (27.18). Pellegrini also led a trio of Engineers to round out the All-New England performers with an eighth-place 59.57 in the 400-meter dash. Rhinehart was 22nd (1:01.42) and Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) was 31st (1:02.57).
Also competing for the Crimson and Gray were Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) in the triple jump (13th, 34-10.5), Sarah Muse (Rye, NH) in the pole vault (17th, 9-6.25) and Katie McManus (North Andover, MA) in the shot put (17th, 35-8.75).
WPI makes its third trip to BU next weekend for the All-New England Championships.
