New London, CT --- Austin Holliday (Danville, CA) set the school record with a triumph in the 200-meter dash and helped two relay teams to victory as the WPI men's outdoor track and field team opened the 2015 season by claiming the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday. The Crimson and Gray collected 175 points as Wesleyan placed second with 81. NEWMAC opponents Coast Guard (79.5), Springfield (65) and Babson (46) came home third, fourth and ninth, respectively.
The track events were conducted at Connecticut College while the field events were contested at the Coast Guard Academy.
Holliday led a contingent of Engineers that filled all but two scoring spots in the 200m with a time of 22.26. Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT) was fourth (23.20), Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) was fifth (23.39), Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) was sixth (23.65), Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) was seventh (23.65) and Nicholas Aleles (Tappan, NY) was eighth (23.69). The day began with a victory in the 4x100-meter relay as D'Amore, Holliday, Mercier and Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) collaborated to deliver a winning time of 43.85.
The foursome of Holliday, Dennis, Aleles and Joey Collins (Standish, ME) closed out the track portion of the event with a first-place 3:28.93 in the 4x400-meter relay while the quartet of Schoenhagen, James Doty (Queensbury, NY), Andrew Kelly (Medfield, MA) and Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) posted the second best time of 3:31.48. Staver and Holliday earned gold and silver in the 400-meter dash with times of 51.39 and 51.99, respectively. Harry Lanphear (Manchester, ME) paced the Engineers in the discus with a winning throw of 122-6. Nate Martel (Steep Falls, ME) came home third (119-1) as Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) was fourth (118-5) and Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) rounded out the top five with a 118-2.
Four Boynton Hillers claimed points in the 110-meter hurdles. Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) led the way with a second-place 16.87. George Kuegler (Tewksbury, MA) was fourth (17.36) and Dennis was fifth (17.44). Harrison Czajkowski (Chapel Hill, NC) took eighth (18.11) for the Engineers. Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) was the runner up in the 800-meter run (1:57.24) and was followed by Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) in seventh (1:59.95).
Zac Chupka (Douglas, MA) tossed the javelin 157-5 to claim third as David Frederick (Orono, ME) cleared 14-1.25 for third in the pole vault. Connor Morette (Leominster, MA) picked up fourth-place points in the pole vault with a 13-1.5.
The Engineers earned three scoring spots each in the hammer throw, shot put and 100-meter dash. Martel took third in both the hammer (158-4) and shot put (42-6) as Lanphear was fourth (149-2) and eighth (39-4), respectively. Shawn Ferrini (Norton, MA) added a sixth-place effort in the hammer (141) as Chad Dellaporta (Billerica, MA) was fourth in the shot put (42-4.75). Mercier was third (11.41) in the 100-meter dash as Whelan was fifth (11.62) and Aleles crossed the finish line seventh (11.66).
The Engineers head to Cambridge on Saturday to face Rensselaer and nationally-ranked MIT at the Engineers Cup.
