Men’s Track and Field Cruises Past Coast Guard and Springfield

Springfield, MA --- Men's Track and Field captured nine of 19 events as WPI cruised to a victory over Coast Guard and Springfield on Saturday at Blake Track. The Engineers teamed up for 180.5 points as Coast Guard collected 110 and Springfield picked up 104.5.

Joey Collins (Standish, ME), Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT), Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) and Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) collaborated to win the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:32.49. Connor Morette (Leominster, MA) cleared 12-11.50 to secure the top spot in the pole vault as George Kuegler (Tewksbury, MA) and Harrison Czajkowski (Chapel Hill, NC) went 1-2 in the 110-meter hurdles with times of 16.38 and 17.08. Andrew Zayac (Plymouth, MA) won the steeplechase in a time of 10:04.50 while Daniel Stomski (Dudley, MA) was fifth (11:02.40) and Dan Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) was sixth (11:15).

The Crimson and Gray had a quartet in the top six in the 100-meter dash, 800-meter run and high jump. Austin Holliday (Danville, CA) took 11 seconds to secure the victory in the 100 and was followed by Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) in third (11.09), Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) in fourth (11.18) and Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) in fifth (11.22). Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) claimed the 800 with a time of 2:00.01. Staver was third (2:03.35) as David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) was fourth (2:03.72) and Thomas Kostelak (Bernardsville, NJ) was sixth (2:04.94). The high jump went to Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) with a height of 6-2. Keith Guay (Nashua, NH) placed second with a clearance of six feet as Tristan Richardson (Attleboro Falls, MA) came home fourth (5-10) and Melvin Moore (Columbus, NH) was sixth (5-10).

The discus saw the Engineers take all but one scoring spot. Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) led the way with a distance of 130 feet to win the event. Harry Lanphear (Manchester, ME) was third (122-2), Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) was fourth (121-2), Nate Martel (Steep Falls, ME) was fifth (120-11) and Jason Beauregard (New Bedford, MA) was sixth (119-6).

Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) posted a second-place time of 4:11.17 in the 1,500-meter run while Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) was fifth (4:21.63). Scott, meanwhile, placed fifth (4:00.61) in the 1,500 at the Silfen Elite Distance Meet at Connecticut College on Friday night.

Beauregard paced the Engineers in the hammer with a second-place throw of 163-1. Martel followed in third (155-1) while Shawn Ferrini (Norton, MA) was fifth (148-1) and Lanphear was sixth (143-2). The long jump saw Moore go 21-4.25 to take second, Guay finish third (20-6.25) and Holliday place fifth (19-2.5).

Moore added a second place effort in the triple jump (39-6.5) as Andrew Schade (Phippsburg, ME) posted a distance of 37-2.25 for fourth. Chad Dellaporta (Billerica, MA) sent the shot put 44 feet to come home second. Martel bested Ferrini by two and a half inches as they placed third (42-8.75) and fourth (42-6.25) for WPI. Bennett rounded out the shot put scorers with a 40-1.05.

Collins turned in a second-place time of 51.74 in the 400-meter dash and Dennis was not far behind in fourth (51.95). Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) and Kuegler were second (1:02.45) and third (1:03.56) in the 400-meter hurdles.

D'Amore added a third place effort in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.21 as  Collins (23.43) and Whelan (23.50) were fifth and sixth. Nathan Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run (16:12.88) as Joe Kelly (Brooklyn Park, MN) crossed the finish line sixth (16:19.32). Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) collected a pair of points with a fifth-place throw of 134-3 in the javelin.

Select student-athletes will head to Holy Cross for the decathlon while the full team is back in action on Saturday at the Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet, hosted by Fitchburg State.
