Springfield, MA --- Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) set the school record while a relay and four others were also victorious as the WPI men's track and field team defeated Westfield State, Springfield and Rhode Island College Saturday in the 2015-16 indoor season opener. The Engineers racked up 168 points while the Owls were six behind with 162. The hosts posted 136 and the Anchormen accumulated 75.
Whelan qualified for all three regional postseason meets as he won the 60-meter dash with a school-record time of 7.07. Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) was the runner up with a time of 7.21 as Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) came home sixth (7.34) after clocking a 7.24 in the prelims. Whelan was also fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.74).
The foursome of David Goodrich (North Haven, CT), James Doty (Queensbury, NY), Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) and Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) collaborated to post the winning time of 8:24.18 in the 4x800-meter relay. Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) claimed the 400-meter dash (52.10) as Staver took the 600-meter run (1:24.22), Justin Trott (North Hampton, NH) secured the 5,000-meter run (15:43.36) and Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) debuted with a triumph in the triple jump (40'). Thomas Mackintosh (Ellington, CT) came home fourth (1:28.32) in the 600 as Michael Brady (Medway, MA) and Jason Bugarin (Fitchburg, MA) finished 3-4 in the 5,000 with times of 15:48.11 and 16:14.68, respectively. Mackintosh, Kelly, Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT) and Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) teamed up for a second-place time of 3:32.60 in the 4x400-meter relay as Mercier, D'Amore, Dennis and Schoenhagen posted a third-place 1:35.95 in the 4x200-meter relay.
Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) was the runner up in the shot put with a distance of 43-9. Connor Morette (Leominster, MA) placed second in the pole vault with a height of 13-11.25 with Lucas Acaba (Groton, MA) following in fourth (12-5.5). The 800-meter run saw Roy cross the finish line second (1:58.83) while Doty was third (2:05.40) and Sean Murphy (Atkinson, MA) was fifth (2:09.78). Jason Beauregard (New Bedford, MA) launched the weight 50-9.25, which was good for third place. Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) and Dan Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) were a fraction of a second apart to finish 3-4 in the mile as they turned in times of 4:37.81 and 4:37.98, respectively. Goodrich added a third place showing in the 1,000-meter run with a 2:38.85 to go along with a fifth-place time by Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA) (2:56.08). Melvin Moore (Columbus, NJ) collected a pair of fourth-place finishes with an even six feet in the high jump and a 20-8.5 in the long jump.
The Engineers are idle until the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday, January 16.
