Springfield, MA --- Alex Price (Franklin, MA) set a new school record while three individuals and two relays struck gold as the WPI women's track and field team finished second at the season-opening Springfield College Indoor Meet on Saturday. The hosts captured the team crown with 181 points as the Engineers tallied 159. Westfield State was third with 124 and Rhode Island College posted 82.
Price headlined the Engineers entries 60-meter dash with a second-place time of 8.05 and was .01 faster in the prelims to set the school record with an 8.04. Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA), Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA) and Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) finished third (8.09), fourth (8.22), fifth (8.26) and sixth (8.263), respectively. Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) won the 600-meter race (1:40.37) as Julia Smith (Cranston, RI) followed in fourth (1:46.88). Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) took the 800-meter run (2:23.75) as Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) placed fifth (2:37.43). Emily Newman (Easton, MA) rounded out the individual winners with a 5:18.67 in the mile. Megan Concannon (Hanson, MA) picked up a point with a a sixth-place time of 6:09.65. Velleca, Price, Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) and Gencorelli clocked a winning time of 4:11.48 in the 4x400-meter relay and Tevenan, Maggie LaRoche (Silverlake, NH), Newman and Strangio delivered a win in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:05.63.
Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME) was second (27.70) and Maggie Kuck (Southbury, CT) was sixth in the 200-meter dash (27.92) as LaRoche was the runner up (3:12.88) and Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) was fourth (3:23.45) in the 1,000-meter run. The 4x200-meter relay team of Velleca, Teed, Price and Pellegrini came home second with a time of 1:48.12. Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) pitched in with a second place distance in the triple jump (34-7.5) and a fourth-place 16-5 in the long jump.
The Engineers accounted for five of the six point scorers in the 5,000-meter run as Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) was second (19:04), Lauren Farry (Pittsfield, MA) was third (19:44.67), Carly Neeld (Williston,VT) was fourth (20:14.48), Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) was fifth (20:16.92) and Jessica Orr (Westerly, RI) was sixth (20:22.03).
Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) cleared 8-6.25 to place third in the pole vault while finishing fifth in the high jump (4-9.75). Abby McAdams (Montville. CT) was two inches better in the high jump to place third. Kirsten Herchenroder (Plaistow, NH) was fifth in the shot put (30-11.25) while Walfield was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.70) and Kendra O'Malley (Charlton, MA) was sixth in the weight throw (39-5).
The Engineers are off until the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday, January 16.
