Brunswick, ME --- Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) set a new school record and the WPI women's track and field team boasted four individual triumphs and a relay win as the Engineers opened 2016 with a first place finish at the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday.
The Crimson and Gray took the meet with 167.5 points followed by RPI with 154.5 and Wheaton with 133. The hosts collected 128 points and Maine-Farmington picked up one.
Tevenan clocked a third-place time of 3:01.43 to better her own record in the 1,000-meter run. Alex Price (Franklin, MA) claimed the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.31 while Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) broke the tape in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.15. Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) cleared 10-6 to win the pole vault and Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) registered a 15-6 in the long jump. Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA), Pellegrini, Price and Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT) struck gold in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:07.91.
The 4x200-meter relay foursome of Velleca, Gencorelli, Teed and Haylea Northcott (Beverly, MA) placed second (1:49.75) as did Pellegrini in the 200-meter dash (26.35), Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) in the 600-meter run (1:42.38), Maggie LaRoche (Silverlake, NH) in the 800-meter run (2:29.10) and Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) in the 5,000-meter run (20:17.86). Teed placed third in the 60-meter dash finals (8.16) while Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) was third in the 3,000-meter run (11:12.19) and Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) earned bronze in the triple jump with a distance of 33-4.
Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) cleared 4-10.25 to finish fourth in the high jump as Kelsey Leigher (Oxford, MA) was fifth in the shot put (34-11.75) and sixth in the weight throw (39.10-5). Emily Newman (Easton, MA) crossed the finish line sixth (5:25.05) in the mile.
"The first meet coming off the winter break is always interesting because other than rust it's hard to predict what you'll get," commented Head Coach Brian Chabot. "As a coach the one thing you hope to see is effort and we saw that from both teams today."
WPI heads west to the Smith Invitational on Saturday.
