Brunswick, ME --- Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) set a new school record and the WPI women's track and field team boasted four individual triumphs and a relay win as the Engineers opened 2016 with a first place finish at the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday.

Tevenan clocked a third-place time of 3:01.43 to better her own record in the 1,000-meter run. Alex Price (Franklin, MA) claimed the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.31 while Liz Pellegrini (Worcester,  MA) broke the tape in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.15. Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) cleared 10-6 to win the pole vault and Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) registered a 15-6 in the long jump. The 4x200-meter relay foursome of Velleca, Gencorelli, Teed and Haylea Northcott (Beverly, MA) placed second (1:49.75) as did Pellegrini in the 200-meter dash (26.35), Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) in the 600-meter run (1:42.38), Maggie LaRoche (Silverlake, NH) in the 800-meter run (2:29.10) and Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) in the 5,000-meter run (20:17.86). Teed placed third in the 60-meter dash finals (8.16) while Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) was third in the 3,000-meter run (11:12.19) and Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) earned bronze in the triple jump with a distance of 33-4.

Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) cleared 4-10.25 to finish fourth in the high jump as Kelsey Leigher (Oxford, MA) was fifth in the shot put (34-11.75) and sixth in the weight throw (39.10-5). Emily Newman (Easton, MA) crossed the finish line sixth (5:25.05) in the mile.

"The first meet coming off the winter break is always interesting because other than rust it's hard to predict what you'll get," commented Head Coach Brian Chabot. "As a coach the one thing you hope to see is effort and we saw that from both teams today."

WPI heads west to the Smith Invitational on Saturday.
