BOSTON – Senior Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) and sophomore Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) each set a school record as the WPI women's track and field team competed at the Boston University Scarlet and White Invitational Saturday.
Pellegrini handed in a 25.33 to pace the Engineers in the 200-meter dash, and rise up to No. 6 nationally in the event, while Strangio paced a trio of Boynton Hillers in the 800-meter run (2:17.18). Following Pellegrini were sophomore Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT) in 26.15, senior Alex Price (Franklin, MA) in 26.37, sophomore Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) in 26.66 and freshman Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA) in 26.59. Junior Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) was the second Engineer to cross the line in the 800 (2:24.28) while sophomore Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) was the third (2:27.56).
Freshman Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) finished the 5,000-meter run seventh in a time of 18:57.05 to go along with sophomore Jasmine Higuera's (Riverside, CA) 15th-place time of 20:08.62. Sophomores Maggie LaRoche (Silverlake, NH) and Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) took to the track for the 1,000-meter run. LaRoche placed 10th in a time of 3:07.30 while MacIntyre was 17th (3:19.28). The mile duo of senior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) and sophomore Emily Newman (Easton, MA) finished half a second apart in 11th (5:09.39) and 13th (5:09.89).
Pellegrini won her 400-meter dash heat and posted her indoor best time of 57.93 while Price also took her heat with a PR of 59.66. Pellegrini's time, as of late Saturday night, sits in a tie for 17th on the Division III leaderboard. Also finding personal success were freshman Cole Godzinski (North Reading, MA) who won her 60-meter hurdle heat (9.64) and sophomore Abby McAdams (Montville, CT) who clocked a personal-best time of 10.59.
In the field events, junior Taylor Flaxington (Lincoln, RI) tied for 10th in the pole vault with a clearance of 10-6. Freshman Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) came home 12th (10-0) and junior Sarah Muse (Portsmouth, NH) was 15th (9-6.25). Freshman Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) tied for 15th in the high jump (4-11), Godzinski leaped 32-11.75 in the triple jump and Teed turned in a distance of 15-7.75 in the long jump.
Freshman Kendra O'Malley (Charlton, MA) (34-10.5) finished ahead of sophomore Kelsey Leigher (Oxford, MA) in the weight throw (33-3.75). The order was reversed in the shot put as Leigher registered a heave of 10.63m and O'Malley logged a 42-7.
The Engineers return to BU on Friday for the women's portion of the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
