BOSTON – Sophomore Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) and senior Jason Beauregard (New Bedford, MA) each turned in a top five finish while Staver set a school record as the WPI men's track and field team ventured to the Boston University Scarlet and White Invitational Saturday.
Staver, who entered the week with the 34th fastest time in Division III this season, became the record holder in the 400-meter dash with a fourth-place time of 48.60. As of late Saturday night, the time is also fourth on the NCAA Division III performance list. He was followed in the event by junior Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT) in 50.20, sophomore Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) in 50.31, freshman Eric Salina (Burlington, MA) in 51.17 and freshman Thomas Mackintosh (Ellington, CT) in 51.33. Beauregard represented the Engineers in the weight throw with a fourth-place heave of 54-3.5, a personal best. Sophomore Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) was the only other Boynton Hiller to turn in a top eight performance as he cleared 6-0.75 to take seventh in the high jump.
The 1,000-meter run saw junior David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) come home 10th (2:35.99), junior Dan Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) cross the finish line 13th (2:38.25) and freshman Remi Gaetjens (Limerick, ME) follow in 14th (2:39.06). Freshman Lucas Acaba (Groton, MA) finished 11th in the pole vault (12-3.5) as did junior Chad DellaPorta (Billerica, MA) in the shot put (43-9) and senior Melvin Moore (Columbus, NJ) in the long jump (20-9). Sophomore Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) added a 16th-place showing in the long jump (20-1) while freshman Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) leaped 19-3.5.
Junior Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) turned in a season-best time of 9.33 to place 13th in the 60-meter hurdles as senior Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) was close to a school record with a 1:55.78 in the 800-meter run. He was joined in the 800 by senior Nathan Varney (East Longmeadow, MA) who posted a 2:01.64 and sophomore James Doty (Queensbury, NY) who was not far behind in 2:01.76.
junior Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) turned in times of 22.98, 23.06 and 23.20, respectively. The mile quartet of sophomore Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH), senior Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA), freshman Mark Landergan (Newburyport, MA) and junior Kyle Morrison (York, ME) were separated by 18 spots and just under 15 seconds beginning with Winship's 4:24.93.
WPI returns to Boston on Saturday for the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
