Cambridge, MA --- The WPI men's track and field team accumulated six All-New England honors and saw one school record fall as the Engineers tied for 10th at the New England Division III Indoor Championships at MIT Saturday. The hosts racked up 138 points to win the team title.
The Crimson and Gray, who began the week No. 12 in the USTFCCCA regional poll, totaled 21 points to tie Connecticut College while finishing in front of four teams ahead of them in the regional ledger; No. 11 Amherst (12th – 20pts), No. 8 Worcester State (14th - 18), No. 10 Colby (17th - 10) and No. 5 Westfield State (18th - 9).
Sophomore Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) zipped to a second-place, and a school record, time of 1:21.38 in the 600-meter run. In the two-day heptathlon, junior Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) registered a personal-best 4,207 points along with season-bests of 7.36 in the 60-meter dash, 9.38 in the 60-meter hurdles and distance of 18-9.25 in the a long jump. He also finished third in the high jump with a clearance of 5-10.75. Senior Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) turned in a 2:32.07 to earn a fifth-place finish in the 1,000-meter run.
Junior Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) came home sixth in the 60-meter dash finals (7.10) while the prelims saw junior Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) turn in a 10th-place 7.13 and senior Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) clock a 7.3 for 23rd. The distance medley relay team of junior Dan Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA), sophomore James Doty (Queensbury, NY), senior Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA) and sophomore Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) were eighth in a time of 20:49.87 while sophomore Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) was eighth in the high jump (6-2.25).
Sophomore Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) rounded out the top 10 performances with a distance of 45-9.25 in the shot put. Sophomore Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) was 12th in the 400-meter dash (51.30) as was senior Jason Beauregard (New Bedford, MA) in the weight throw (47-8.5).
The 4x400-meter relay quartet of sophomore Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH), Kelly, freshman Thomas Mackintosh (Ellington, CT) and Staver clocked a 3:35.09 to place 15th as the 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Eric Salina (Burlington, MA), junior David Goodrich (North Haven, CT), senior Nathan Varney (East Longmeadow, MA) and Roy came home 16th (8:18.21). Senior Connor Morette (Leominster, MA) cleared 13-5.25 in the pole vault while Goodrich turned in a time of 2:01.75 in the 800-meter run.
Qualified student-athletes will head back to BU next weekend for the All-New England All-Divisions (NEICAAA) Championships.
