Medford, MA --- Senior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) and junior Taylor Flaxington (Lincoln, RI) each secured a victory as the WPI women's track & field team placed second at the Tufts Sunshine Invitational Saturday.
A fully-staffed Jumbos team posted 260 points to take the team title while the Engineers (119) rested a number of student-athletes ahead of next Saturday's NEWMAC Championship at Coast Guard. The hosts came into the meet ranked sixth in the region and the Crimson and Gray were slotted seventh per the USTFCCCA computer.
The meet also included regionally-ranked No. 8 UMass Boston in third (98) and regionally-ranked No. 24 Amherst in fourth (76). Jumbo Alumni occupied fifth (54) as Wheaton was the next collegiate team with 23. Mass. Maritime rounded out the field with 16.
Tevenan took the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:48.12 as Flaxington cleared 10-6 in the pole vault. Sophomore Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) earned silver in the 400-meter dash (1:00.06) as freshman Katie Nugent (Huntington, NY) turned in a fourth-place 1:00.21 and sophomore Maggie LaRoche (Silverlake, NH) came home eighth (1:01.25). Freshman Cole Godzinski (North Reading, MA) registered a second-place 16.06 in the 100-meter hurdle finals to go along with a sixth-place 18.42 by sophomore Abby McAdams (Montville, CT). Both registered a better time in the prelims with a 15.99 and 16.84, respectively. McAdams added a pair of seventh-place finishes in the long jump (15-2) and shot put (30-9.25).
The 4x100-meter relay of sophomore Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA), freshman Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA), senior Alex Price (Franklin, MA) and sophomore Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT) collaborated for a time of 49.45, which was good for second. Sophomore Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) and freshman Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) both cleared 5-0.25 and were credited with second and third place while junior Heather Selmer (Weathersfield, VT) was sixth in the pole vault (8-0.5). Teed was also eighth in the long jump (14-7.75).
Freshman Kendra O'Malley (Charlton, MA) was third in the javelin (82-2) and hammer throw (138-3) as sophomore Kirsten Herchenroder (Plaistow, NH) represented the Engineers in the hammer with a sixth-place 120-8 and the shot put with an eighth-place 29-10.25. Sophomore Emily Newman (Easton, MA) crossed the finish line third in the 800-meter run (2:19.85) and was followed by classmate Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) in fifth (2:25.28). Sophomore Kelsey Leigher (Oxford, MA) led the Crimson and Gray in the discus and shot put as her throws were fourth (122-10) and fifth (33-5.25), respectively. Junior Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME) collected seventh-place points in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.68.
