Wittenberg, Hanlon & Rus Highlight Individual Efforts in Men’s Track & Field Opener

Springfield, MA --- The WPI men's track & field team secured three individual wins, including a pair by newcomers, and featured six Division III New England Championships qualifying performances as the Engineers began the 2016-17 season competing against the Pride, Conn. College, Merchant Marine, Stevens and Westfield State Saturday.

Freshmen Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) and Alex Rus (Newton, MA) took home gold in the mile (4:30.86) and 400-meter dash (51.85), respectively. The quartet of sophomore Antoine Harris (Southington, CT), junior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA), junior Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) and Rus collaborated to close out the meet with a winning-time of 3:31.08 in the 4x400-meter relay.

Sophomore Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) was triumphant in the 800-meter run to lead the postseason qualifiers with a time of 1:59.17. Junior Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) cleared 6-2 to claim third place in the high jump. Freshman Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH) and Harris finished third and fourth in the 60-meter dash finals with their better times of 7.14 and 7.17, respectively. They were joined by senior Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) who clocked a 7.18 in the prelims. Freshman Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) put up an 8.88 to take fourth in the 60-meter hurdle finals.

Sophomore Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) was second in a head-to-head competition with a triple jumper from Springfield with a distance of 40-11.75 while classmate Lucas Acaba (Groton, MA) was the runner up in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-11.5. Junior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) took second in the 500-meter run (1:08.56) as freshman Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, RI) claimed silver in the mile (4:36.11). The 800-meter run saw senior David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) and freshman Kevin O'Driscoll (Norwell, MA) cross the finish line second (2:04.38) and third (2:04.41). Senior Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) and sophomore Thomas Mackintosh (Ellington, CT) did the same in the 400-meter dash with times of 54.04 and 54.18.

Senior Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) took third in the weight throw (43-7) to go along with a third-place 20-4.50 by freshman Billy Kopellas (Needham, MA) in the long jump. Junior Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) was fourth in the shot put (42-11.75) and classmate Jason Bugarin (Fitchburg, MA) was fifth in the 3,000-meter run (9:03.88). Whelan and freshman Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) were seventh in the 200-meter dash (24.15) and 60-meter hurdles (9.19).

WPI is idle until it travels to Bowdoin on January 14.
