Springfield, MA --- The WPI women's track & field team earned three wins and combined for eight Division III New England qualifying marks in the Engineers 2016-17 debut at Springfield. The non-scoring meet also included Conn. College, Merchant Marine, Stevens and Westfield State.
Freshman Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) captured the 800-meter run in a time of 2:22.52 while junior Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT) secured the 200-meter dash and was a hundredth of a second off a qualifying time with a 27.11. Sophomore Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) and senior Taylor Flaxington (Lincoln, RI) were 1-2 in the pole vault as each cleared 10 feet. Freshman Faye Gauthier (West Warwick, RI) was the runner up in the weight throw with a heave of 48-2.50 while sophomore Cole Godzinski (North Reading, MA) was second in both the 60-meter hurdles (9.50) and finals (9.55). Freshman Krystal Grant (Hampden, ME) improved on her initial fourth-place 60-meter dash time by .06 to earn silver as Velleca finished fifth in both and shaved off .05 from her prelims mark with a qualifying time of 8.18. The 500-meter run saw senior Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) place second with a time of 1:21.58.
Freshman Callie Schadt (Brewster, MA) was second in the mile (5:30.54) as senior Sarah Muse (Portsmouth, NH) and sophomore Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) followed Dykstra and Flaxington in the pole vault with third and fourth-place heights of 9-6.25 and 9-0.25. Junior Abby McAdams (Montville, CT) ended up fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.61) after claiming fourth in the prelims (10.41). The 4x400-meter relay comprised of Velleca, Kocienski, sophomore Haylea Northcott (Beverly, MA) and freshman Krystal Grant (Hampden, ME) took second in a time of 4:19.65.
Korn added a third-place height of 4-9.75 in the high jump as senior Marguerite Carey (Middleboro, MA) was third in the 400-meter dash (1:07.07). Sophomore Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) was fourth in the 3,000-meter run (11:18.44) and freshman Aleye Momodu (Milford, MA) registered a 28-1.50 in the shot put.
The Engineers are off until Saturday, January 14 with a trip to Bowdoin.
