New London, CT --- WPI Men's Track & Field propelled by five victories, defeated Coast Guard and Springfield Friday. The Engineers racked up 166 points followed by the Bears with 124 and the Pride with 95. Over at Connecticut College Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) broke the 5,000-meter run school record during the elite distance portion of the two-day Silfen Track & Field Invitational Friday night.
Junior Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) earned entry into the All-New England All Divisions Championships with his winning time of 49.35 in the 400-meter dash. Freshman Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) crossed the finish line first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:06.84 while sophomore Michael Brady (Medway, MA) led the Engineers to a 1-2-3 finish in the 5,000-meter run with a 15:24.02. Freshman Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) broke the tape in the 110-meter hurdles (15.81) while classmate Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) headlined a 1-2-3 shot put with a distance of 44-0.5.
Scott posted a time of 14:54.49 to set the 5K mark in a sixth-place finish. Senior Kyle Morrison (York, ME) took just under 10 minutes (9:58.08) to place second in the steeplechase. Junior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) added a 10th-place 1:57.71 in the 800-meter run. Junior David Frederick (Orono, ME) represented the Engineers in the two-day decathlon where he totaled 5,286 points. He won the javelin (162-7) and pole vault (14-1.25) to go along with second place efforts in the 1,500-meter run (4:38.94), 400-meter dash (54.00), 110-meter hurdles (17.41) and discus (106-7). His score is currently 27th in Division III this season.
Back at Coast Guard, freshman Alex Rus (Newton, MA) and junior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) came home third (50.04) and fifth (50.47) in the 400m as freshman Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, RI) and sophomore Remington Gaetjens (Limerick, ME) were third (4:11.62) and sixth (4:17.50) in the 1,500m. The 100mH also saw freshman Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) take third in a time of 16.61.
Junior Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) and senior Chad DellaPorta (Billerica, MA) took second and third in the shot put with heaves of 41-10.5 and 39-2.25. Freshman Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) had the second quickest 5K with a 15:31.87 and senior Daniel Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) followed with a 15:35.13. Senior Nathan Stomberg (W. Greenwich, RI) added a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 16:00.32.
Freshman Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH), senior Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) and senior Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) were .11 seconds apart in a 2-3-4 finish in the 100-meter dash with times of 11.11, 11.18 and 11.22, respectively. Rus and Schoenhagen, meanwhile, placed third (22.25) and sixth (22.39) in the 200-meter dash.
Sophomore Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) crossed the finish line second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.35. He was followed by senior David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) and Ingegneri in fifth (2:01.25) and sixth (2:06.00). The 400-meter hurdles featured a quartet placing third through sixth. Senior Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) led the foursome with a 58.81 as Schimmel turned in a 1:01.00, sophomore Zach Zolotarevsky (Easton, MA) posted a 1:01.24 and Gaziano handed in a 1:01.50.
Junior Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) achieved a height of 6-4 to place second in the high jump. Freshman Garth Hull (Arlington, MA) cleared 6-0 to place fourth and junior Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) jumped 5-10 for fifth.
Sophomore Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA), freshman Billy Kopellas (Needham, MA) and DeVine recorded the second (21-3.25), third (20-5) and fourth (20-3) place leaps in the long jump. Kopellas also placed second in the triple jump (40-6). The combination of Bennett, sophomore Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) and senior Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) were second through fourth in the discus and hammer. Bennett was second in the discus (136-4) and third in the hammer (138-10) as Gagne placed second in the hammer (141-5) and third in the discus (130-9). Johnson was fourth in both events (FT - 128-10, HT – 138-5) as junior Patrick Wang (Beijing, China) checked in fifth in the hammer (136-6) and sixth in the discus (118-7). The javelin saw junior Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) and freshman Mike Corace (Spotswood, NJ) take third (168-10) and fourth (160-4).
WPI treks to the Springfield College Classic on Saturday, April 22nd.
