Springfield, MA --- Junior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) collected a pair of victories for WPI as Men's Track & Field took part in Saturday's Springfield College Classic.
The Engineers competed against student-athletes from American International, Castleton, Coast Guard, Elms, Framingham State, Hampshire, Hostos CC, Keene State, Lasell, Lehman College, Maine-Maritime, Northern Essex CC, Oneonta, Springfield, STCC, St. Anselm, UMass-Boston, Westfield State, Williams and WPI.
Kelly posted a significant PR in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.36 and added a 50.96 in the 400-meter dash. His previous 200 standard of 22.89 set 364 days ago at the Tufts Sunshine Classic. Sophomore Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) was not far behind with a second-place 51.15 in the longer event.
Senior Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) claimed the 1,500-meter run with a 3:58.78 as junior David Frederick (Orono, ME) achieved gold with a height of 15-3 in the pole vault. Scott was also sixth in the 800-meter run. Freshman Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, RI) led a 1-2-3 Engineer finish in the 5,000-meter run with a 15:35.22. Seniors Daniel Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) and Nathan Stomberg (W. Greenwich, RI) handed in times of 15:37.73 and 15:39.24. The shot put saw freshman Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) send the projectile 42-9.5 to secure the top spot while senior Chad DellaPorta (Billerica, MA) came home third (41-3).
Second place finishers also included freshman Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) in the 110-meter hurdles (15.91), senior Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) in the 400-meter hurdles (59.29), senior Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) in the hammer (143-2) and junior Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) in the javelin (182-4). Gazaiano had the best time in the 110H trials with a 15.63.
Junior Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) earned bronze in the high jump with a clearance of 6-4. Sophomore Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) took third in the discus with a huge PR of 136-8, up from the 130-9 he achieved last week at Coast Guard. Freshman Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH), freshman Alex Rus (Newton, MA), senior Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) and senior Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) handed in a third-place 42.66 in the 4x100-meter relay. D'Amore also took fourth in the solo 100m (11.12).
The 4x400-meter relay team of senior David Goodrich (North Haven, CT), freshman Kevin O'Driscoll (Norwell, MA), freshman Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) and junior James Doty (Queensbury, NY) took fourth in a time of 3:33.28. Sophomore Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) led the Engineers in the triple jump (5th - 40-4.75) and long jump (7th – 20-8.5).
Men's Track & Field begins the postseason Saturday with the NEWMAC Championships at MIT.
