Cambridge, MA --- Junior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) won the 400-meter dash and freshman Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) captured the 110-meter hurdles as WPI placed second as a team at the 2017 NEWMAC Track & Field Championships. It is the sixth year in-a-row the Engineers have been the runner up at the event.
Staver, the runner up the past two years, broke the tape with a time of 49.15 while Gaziano clocked a 15.37 to claim the event after posting a second-place 15.95 in the prelims.
Michael Brady (Medway, MA), Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA), David Frederick (Orono, ME), Patrick Wang (Beijing, China) and Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) achieved All-NEWMAC status by placing second in their solo events in addition to the 4x100-and 4x400 meter relays. Brady turned in a time of 15:34.36 in the 5,000 meter run while Hoghaug matched his 2016 title effort with a 6-4 performance in the high jump and Frederick cleared 14-11 in the pole vault. Wang launched the hammer throw 152-3 and Weeks turned in a distance of 179-7 in the javelin. It marks the second consecutive All-Conference nod in the hammer as NCAA participant Jason Beauregard '16 had been the reigning champion.
The foursome of Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT), Alex Rus (Newton, MA), Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH) and Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) crossed the finish line in the 4x100 in a time of 43.02 while Rus, Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH), Staver and Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA) turned in a 3:22.96 in the 4x400. It was the second time in three years the 4x100 was the runner up as D'Amore and Whelan were on opposite ends of the lineup in 2015 while it was the 4x400's fifth consecutive All-Conference finish, which included Kelly and Wittenberg a year ago.
Eight different Engineers took home bronze medals. Rus ran a 22.26 in the 200-meter dash while Kelley was clocked in 49.35 in the 400-meter dash. Nick Santangelo (Sudbury, MA) reached the finish line in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.99, Kyle Morrison (York, ME) turned in a time of 9:53.87 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Nathan Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI) posted a 33:36.86 in the 10,000-meter run. Billy Kopellas (Needham, MA) leapt 21.3.50 in the long jump while Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) sent the shot put 44.3.25 and Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA) heaved the javelin 148-4.
Men's Track and Field returns to action on Friday and Saturday at the New England Division III Championships at Williams.
